MNSL Rules

 

MNSL generally follows the the FIFA Laws of the Game and adheres to US Youth Soccer competitive mandates.  There are a few rules unique to our league:

 

MNSL U6 DIVISION

  • Ball size 3
  • 4 v 4, no goalie, across the width of the smaller field
  • Four – 10 minute quarters
  • Throw-ins should be used but don't be tight - encourage
  • All restarts from fouls are indirect kicks (cannot score goal directly from restart)
  • Corner and goal kicks suggested
  • Don't discourage dribbling!  Passing is not viewed as an age appropriate skill
  • Coaches referee
  • Coaches direct substitutions
  • PUGG Nets MUST be used
  • No offsides
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • All players should rotate through all positions during the game
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum

 

MNSL U8 DIVISION

 

  • Ball size 3
  • 6 v 6 with goalie, across adjusted width of larger field
  • Use smaller set of portable goals
  • Two – 20 minute halves
  • Don't discourage dribbling, but begin to develop passing concepts
  • Throw-ins, repeat 1x with instruction, if necessary, then kick-in
  • Coaches referee
  • Coaches direct substitutions
  • Indirect kicks – yes
  • No direct kicks
  • All restarts from fouls are indirect kicks (cannot score goal directly from restart)
  • No penalty shots
  • No off sides
  • All players should rotate through all positions during the game
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum

 

MNSL U10 DIVISION

 

  • Ball size 4
  • 6 v 6 with goalie, across entire width of larger field
  • Use larger set of portable goals
  • Two – 25 minute halves
  • Throw-ins, repeat 1x with instruction, if necessary.  If still incorrect, other team gains possession
  • Indirect kicks – yes
  • All restarts from fouls are indirect kicks (cannot score directly from restart)
  • No direct kicks
  • No penalty shots
  • No off sides
  • All players should rotate through all positions during the game
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • Yellow/Red cards are not used however refs will instruct players

 

MNSL U12 DIVISION

 

  • Ball size 4
  • 8 v 8 with goalie on smaller field
  • Two – 30 minute halves
  • Indirect kicks – yes
  • Direct kicks - yes
  • Penalty shots - yes
  • Off sides – called throughout the season starting with first game
  • Yellow/Red cards enforced
  • All players should rotate through all positions during the game
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum

 

MNSL U14 DIVISION


  • Ball size 5
  • 11 v 11 with goalie
  • Two – 35 minute halves
  • Indirect kicks – yes
  • Direct kicks - yes
  • Penalty shots – yes
  • Off sides – called throughout the season starting with the first game
  • Yellow/Red cards enforced
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum

 

MNSL U16, U19 DIVISION

 

  • Ball size 5
  • 11 v 11
  • Two – 40 minute halves (U16)
  • Two – 45 minute halves (U19)
  • Indirect kicks – yes
  • Direct kicks - yes
  • Penalty shots - yes
  • Off sides – called throughout the season beginning with the first game
  • Yellow/Red cards enforced
  • Slide tackling not allowed call as dangerous play
  • Players MUST play half the game minimum
